The Very First Night | Taylor Swift Book Recommendations

Taylor Swift’s “The Very First Night” is a song that encapsulates fondly reminiscing about a first date. Released as part of her fourth studio album, “Red,” the track captures the feeling of intimate moments no one else knows about. A vault track released on “Red: Taylor’s Version” in November of 2021, “The Very First Night” quickly became a personal favorite.

Did you know that Taylor envisioned her fourth studio album as a statement of her “thirst for learning”? To this end “Red” is often criticized for its lack of a coherent sound or genre. With a number of critics describing it as a transitional album from country to pop. It is hard to deny the rock influence in a number of the songs. The surprise  performance of “The Very First Night” in Argentine was a performance that highlighted the transitional nature of the “Red” album.

The song is a beautiful reflection on the shared moments of a first date or new love. If “Red” is one of your favorite albums I am so excited to recommend Thank you for Listening

The Very First Night Book Recommendation

Thank You for Listening by Julia Whelan

Meet Thank You for Listening by Julia Whelan . This is a contemporary women’s fiction/ literature novel published in August 2022 and is the second book authored by Julia Whelan. You might recognize that name as a narrator for some of our favorite authors Taylor Jenkins Reid and Emily Henry.

Sewanee Chester is a reluctant audiobook narrator after a devastating accident ends her on screen acting career. Finding satisfaction and success in a sound booth has allowed her to care for her ailing grandmother. Sewanee finds herself at a cross roads in both her personal and professional lives. Her grandmothers health is continuing to deteriorate and the the opportunity to resurrect her old romance pseudonym might be the solution. While attending a book convention  Sewanee is forced to confront her bias against the Romance Genre and finds herself in the middle of some very popular tropes.

The book is full of humor while still tacking major emotional conflicts. Sewanee embarks on a joinery of self-love and acceptance that results in a discovery of a world of intimacy she never imagined.

The book fits the theme of the song because it shows how much one night can impact two people. What Sewanee was ready to call a one night stand and move on stayed with her in unexpected emotional attachment that is reflected in the essence of the song’s lyrics, such as:

  • “My friends all say they know everything I’m going through”
    • This is such a fitting line for Sewanee as she navigates the care of her grandmother and changes in her professional life.
  • ” ‘Cause they don’t know about the night in the hotel”
    • Every time I hear this line I think about Sewanee remembering the snowed in night in Vegas.
  • “No one knows about the words that we whispered/ No one knows how much I miss you”
    • This is similar to how Sewanee doesn’t really share much about her one night stand but can’t stop thinking about the mysterious Irish man.
  • “I’m on the phone as you whisper/ Do you know how much I miss you”
    • This points to the texting and email flirtation between the audiobook narrators as they work on the duel narration project.

If you are looking for a fun, flirty, and fabulous read that will make you remember the very first night, you should definitely check out Thank You for Listening  by Julia Whelan. You won’t regret it! You can find it on Amazon, Goodreads, or your local bookstore. Happy reading! 😊
