Do you ever add books to your Goodreads or to-read pile, put them on order at the library, and begin reading them only to pause in the first chapter and go “what is this even about” or “why did I want to read this again?” That’s exactly how I felt with The Recovery Agent by Janet Evanovich. And, to be frank, I’m still confused about why I read and finished it.

Summary of The Recovery Agent

The Recovery Agent

The Recovery Agent is a fast-paced and fun adventure thriller that introduces Gabriela Rose, a professional treasure hunter who works for clients who have lost something valuable. Gabriela is smart, brave, and skilled in weapons and martial arts, but she also has a personal stake in her latest assignment: finding the legendary Seal of Solomon, a ring that supposedly belonged to King Solomon and has the power to control demons.

Gabriela’s family believes that the ring is part of the treasure that the pirate Blackbeard hid in Peru, and they need it to save their home from foreclosure.

However, Gabriela is not the only one looking for the ring. She has to contend with a ruthless drug lord who wants to use the ring for his own nefarious purposes, as well as her ex-husband Rafer, who has the only map that can lead them to the treasure. Rafer is a charming and laid-back adventurer who still has feelings for Gabriela, but also enjoys teasing and infuriating her. The two have to work together to overcome the dangers and obstacles that await them in the jungle, while also dealing with their unresolved issues and sparks of attraction.

The Recovery Agent Book Review:

What I Liked

The Recovery Agent is a highly entertaining and fast-paced novel that should appeal to fans of Janet Evanovich’s signature humor and quirky characters. The book is full of action, suspense, romance, and comedy, as well as fascinating historical and mythical details about the Seal of Solomon and Blackbeard’s treasure. The book also sets up the potential for more adventures with Gabriela and Rafer in the future, as they have a lot of chemistry and banter, as well as a knack for finding trouble.

What I Didn't Like

Honestly, this book read like a debut novel and would have been much better suited to the big screen as a cheesy action movie. The plot felt flat and didn’t live up to the hype or potential it had. The dialogue felt forced. The writing style (in addition to feeling like a debut novel when it wasn’t) wasn’t particularly descriptive and instead was very “this happened then this then that” which is, obviously, annoying. Oh, and the characters were very stereotypical and surface-level without anything actually happening that you didn’t see coming a mile away.

Impresion Overall

Overall, I think I expected “Tomb Raider” (which is one of my favorite action movies) vibes and instead got a low budget “we spent 5 hours max filming and editing this” wannabe Indiana Jones book. I would only recommend it if you’re truly bored and have low expectations.

Final Bookish Thoughts of The Recovery Agent

Is this a harsh book review? Probably. It’s up to you if you want to read this book (obviously). I haven’t read anything else by Janet Evanovich and, based on this book, like won’t. But if you decide to ignore my suggestions and read this book anyway, my biggest recommendation is you keep your book standards low.
